Marty Stuart ~ Country Night Gstaad ~ Gstaad, Switzerland

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 6TH, 2022 – NASHVILLE TO ZURICH TO GSTAAD, SWITZERLAND:

Flying “solo” to the Gstaad Country Nights Festival in Switzerland today.  I have Marty Stuart performing and he has been in Europe for a couple of weeks now performing in other countries.  Carly Pearce, Rhonda Vincent, and Bastian Baker will also perform on Friday and Saturday nights.

No issues at the airport this morning except getting my Wi-Fi to connect in the Lounge.  It kept holding on to the old password from July.  Finally turned off the computer and started over and it worked.

While I was waiting in the gate area, there was a man talking into his phone and he was literally yelling, “I can’t hear you.  I’m at the airport.”  He had the person he was talking to on speaker phone and trust me, the entire waiting area could hear everything she was saying to him. Obviously, he was almost deaf.  He continued with a lengthy conversation to which we all were privy.

Lots of turbulence on the little jet from Nashville to JFK and for the first time in years, had to take a bus from the terminal where I landed to the terminal where I will depart.  As I was riding over, I got a message from Delta saying one of my bags had been loaded onto my flight.  There’s no way because the plane doesn’t depart until 8:30 pm tonight and I landed at 3:00 pm.  The Delta agent was unable to explain what happened.   I just hope the bag travels and lands with me tonight!

There was a long line to get into the Delta Lounge and about 15 minutes later when I finally walked in, the Lounge was only half full.  No idea what that was about! Got my laptop set up and all “situated” and the man sitting next to me started yelling into his phone.  Yep…same guy from the Nashville airport.  His conversation lasted about 30 minutes and then thankfully, he left!

I spent the 5 hour layover working in the Lounge then walked to the gate about 10 minutes before boarding time.   We were immediately notified that the plane was being cleaned and should be ready for boarding soon. But, when people would walk up to the gate to inquire about the delay, the gate agent was directing them back to the Lounge.  That’s never a good sign that the plane will be departing any time soon.  As I assume, an hour and 15 minutes later, they finished cleaning the plane.  I think they should have let the passengers vote on whether it was more important to have a “clean” airplane or depart on time so they wouldn’t miss their connections.  After we finally boarded, since this is JFK and we lost our “slot” in the take-off line, we sat on the runway for another 40 minutes.  The best news was that one of the videos playing was “Maverick” and I had not had time to go see it at the theatre yet.  It was awesome except that they had to shut all the video monitors down about 30 minutes into the flight and it took another 30 minutes for them to re-start.  Flight was 8 hours and no turbulence.

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 7TH – ARRIVAL IN GSTAAD:

We landed about 30 minutes later than scheduled.  I was checking Rhonda Vincent’s flight the entire trip and it showed that they landed before we did.  They were supposed to pick up their bags on the belt next to us and it was deserted by the time I arrived at baggage claim.  I sent her a text but did not hear back so I assumed they had already exited into the arrivals area.  My bags came out quickly and the driver was waiting with a sign when I walked out.  He didn’t speak or understand a lot of English but I did realize that Rhonda and her group were not with him.

I was able to locate Beth (with Harry Stinson, Marty’s drummer) very quickly.  She had spent the night at the Radisson connected to the airport.  Had been communicating before we left Nashville and already felt like we had known each other for years.  We all started a search for Rhonda and her group but could not find anyone.  About 30 minutes later, I got a text from Rhonda.  They had been sitting in baggage claim waiting for us.

The trip to Gstaad was about 3 hours long.  Scenery is beautiful but the last hour is very small, two lane winding roads.  Thankfully I was sitting in front of the Sprinter Van and only got slightly nauseous.  We dropped Rhonda and her group off at their beautiful hotel downtown and Elsi and Heidi (our super sweet hosts!) were waiting there to greet everyone.  We then drove up (and I do mean UP!) to the Alpina where Beth and I are staying with Marty’s group.  The Alpina is a 5 Star Resort that you have heard me mention many times.  Absolutely breathtakingly beautiful.

I received a text from Gina at the Opry while we were driving from the airport to Gstaad saying their flight departing Nashville had left late and they missed their connection in London by just a few minutes.  They landed at around 12:30 pm and could not get a flight to Zurich until 7:30 that night, landing at 10:30.  That means it would be around 2 am before they would arrive at the hotel.  Heidi was discussing having them stay at a hotel at the airport and driving them into Gstaad today.

We had drinks with Elsi and Heidi and two really sweet couples from Carly Pearce’s group who arrived earlier in the day.  They had been sightseeing all over Switzerland for the past few days.  Carly and the rest of the group were supposed to arrive at the Geneva airport later tonight. Dinner was, of course, amazing and we had so much fun telling “road” stories.

While we were having drinks, I got a phone call from one of the Florida Military bases that I am taking the Gary Sinise Foundation Comedy Tour to the first week of October.  They had to cancel our performance there which threw me into a panic.  However, I called my stepson who works at a base in the Florida panhandle and in less than an hour – with terrible cell and Wi-Fi service and trying to have dinner with the group – I had another base locked in.  Crisis averted thankfully.

Getting in bed at 2:30 am.

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 8TH – WESTERN PARTY IN GSTAAD:

I worked until 2:30 am and set my alarm for 7:30 am…I thought.  It went off at 5:30 am and I could not go back to sleep. Got up, took my shower and worked until around 9:30 when I went downstairs for their amazing breakfast buffet.

Marty and the band/crew are bussing in from Berlin overnight and supposed to arrive at the Alpina at around 3 pm.  Going to be a busy afternoon/evening with a “pre-load in” at the venue at 4:30, then the Western Party at 7:30 pm.   The Western Party was going to be held up at Glacier 3000 but the weather prediction wasn’t good for today so they moved it to the venue.  The Glacier is awesome and hopefully everyone will be able to see it on Saturday for a little sightseeing excursion.

Spent all morning working and then checking on Marty’s group for their arrival time.  Turns out the group who went to the glacier today also stopped by the cheese factory and church so they had a wonderful day of sightseeing.

Marty’s group arrived closer to 4 pm at the venue because their bus and trailer is too large to turn around at the hotel.  The hotel provided shuttle vans to bring them from the venue up to the Alpina.  I had their room keys waiting for them.   Then, I went down to the venue to make sure everything was taken care of for the crew.  They finished up a little after 6 pm and we all took the hotel shuttle back up to the Alpina.

Everyone met in the lobby at 7:15 pm to go to the venue for the “Western Party”. As usual, everyone but the Americans were dressed in boots, jeans, fringed jackets, cowboy hats – true “country” attire!  It’s always such a great party and I get to see so many of my Swiss friends at this one event.    And the food…..absolutely amazing.  I sat with Dan and Gina from the Opry and really enjoyed getting to spend time with them “away from the hustle and bustle at the Opry”.  I think they are really enjoying Switzerland.  Gina has posted some amazing photos and I learned that the group who went to the glacier today also stopped by the cheese factory and church.  I got so caught up in talking and saying hello to everyone that I forgot to take even one photo with my friends! Strangely enough a photo that I did not take showed up in my photos. I guessed I must have walked past someone who had their iPhone Air Drop turned on and it went into my photos as well. It’s the photo of the chocolate bars so I apologize from “stealing” from whoever???

I got back to the hotel at around 10 pm and then worked until 2 am.  Set the alarm for 5:30 am (for real, this time) since Marty’s group has to depart the hotel at 8:15 am for load in and sound check.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBEER 9TH , 2022 – FIRST PERFORMANCE AT GSTAAD COUNTRY NIGHT:

I met the crew in the lobby at 8:15 for the drive to the venue.  Production company was already there and waiting for us.  It took a little longer than anticipated to set the stage so I delayed having the band picked up by 30 minutes.  The musicians actually took less time than budgeted so everything got back on track.

Had a quick lunch with Marty when we got back to the hotel.  It was more of a “catch up” session than anything else.  So much fun talking about our previous trips overseas.  It’s been way too long since we have worked together.  The only thing better would have been if Connie could have been there as well.  What amazing, wonderful people they both are!

Worked until time to go to the venue at 10 pm.  I did order room service for dinner.  I ordered the wiener schnitzel so I could compare it to what I ate in Austria in June.  When it arrived and the room service staff removed the “dome” covering the food, my initial comment was “Oh My”.  There were two HUGE pieces of schnitzel.  Check out my facebook page for photos.  I ate one half of one piece.  It was delicious but what a waste!

We arrived at the venue in time to see most of Carly Pearce’s show.  She did a great show and the audience seemed to love her. Got to catch up with some more of my Swiss friends in the backstage area then it was time for  Marty and his Fabulous Superlatives to take the stage.  It is hard for me to believe that I haven’t seen them perform since we were in  Norway in 2006!  OMG….if you have never seen their show or it’s been a while since you have seen them, please take my advice and go see them perform.  It is the most amazing show.  The vocals, the instrumentalists, the “stage look” – all the ultimate in country music “class”.  I went live on Facebook for some of the show but my arms got so tired from holding up the iPhone that I had to disconnect.   I can’t find words to describe how wonderful they sounded.

I’m going to try and video some short segments of some of the highlights tomorrow night. The problem is, every song is a highlight!

Afterwards, the band went back to the hotel and the crew stayed and ate at the buffet.  Again, another huge spread of food for everyone.  I did not eat a bite.  I was still full from the wiener schnitzel.  LOL.

Got back to the hotel at 2:30 am and was in bed by 3 am. I’ll pay for not taking care of some emails before going to bed but just had to get a little sleep!

Saturday, September 10th, 2022 – Last Show at Country Night Gstaad:

How quickly the time here has flown!  It was really nice to get more than 3 hours of sleep. Exercised, showered and got caught up on work. I did take a break a little after a noon to go down and double check with the guys going to the glacier. All was on schedule and I went back to work. Hard to work here with so many other things to do!

At 4:30 pm, I went down to the venue with Justine and Marty so he could do about an hour and a half of interviews. I met the European representative for Big Machine records and had a great conversation with him. Hopefully we can work together on some of my events!  Really nice guy!

Had several more hours to work before getting ready to go to the venue. The venue is packed tonight!  Caught a little of Carly’s show and Marty went on a few minutes late. Once again, he and the guys are spectacular.  They got several standing ovations even though it was well after midnight when they finished their set. My promoter and his wife were there from Germany and I talked to them for a while after the show.

Did not see Dan and Gina tonight.  My guess is they went back to the hotel after Rhonda’s set and tried to sleep. Their group is leaving for the airport at 3:00 am!

It was after 2 am when I got back to the Alpina and after 3 am when I finally got packed and into bed with a 5:30 am wakeup call.

Special thanks to Marcel, Heidi, Elsi, Martin and all the drivers for taking such excellent care of everyone  — and being so nice and friendly.  Love working with these people!!!

Sunday, September 11th, 2022 – traveling home from Gstaad:

Hard to believe it has been 21 years since the horrible attack on America.  I not only think about it on the anniversary date but every day because my friends in the military are a constant reminder of how precious our freedom is.

We departed the hotel at 8:00 am for a very winding 2 and a half hour drive to the airport. Harry, Beth and Justine are staying over to sightsee for another week. Since there are only 8 of us, we had a large sprinter van with a trailer.

I said goodbye to the guys at the American Airlines check in counter and I had to go over to the French side of the airport!  The Geneva airport sits in two countries and has 2 terminals. Before we left, I had the hotel trying to help me figure out which terminal we were going out of but the were not able to help me. It is a strange setup. When I finally arrived on the lounge, I asked where the Sprungli chocolate shop was located. As I suspected, it was on the Swiss side and the lounge agent said we were not “supposed” to go back over but she told me how.  It was much smaller than the Zurich airport but was able to find most of the chocolate I needed.  David Bellamy’s birthday is coming up so I am loading him down with chocolate. 😇🥰. I was able to go into the small but not crowded Air France lounge and work for about an hour. When I checked in for the flight in Geneva, the lady at the check-in counter tried to get me to pay to upgrade to the one remaining First class seat on the 8 hour flight to JFK. She said there are only 4 seats which are actually “suites” and you get a massage and special meal.  She checked the price and when she said it would be a additional $2,300, I told her my business class seat was just fine.

The short flight from Geneva to Paris was miserable because the seats were so cramped.  I could not even cross my legs!  And I was in business class!   I booked my flights on Delta but they partner with Air France for the flight to Paris and JFK.   The landing was even more impressive.  The plane was still rocking from side to side as we landed and after we touched down.  I wasn’t sure if we were going to be swept off the runway or turned around and headed back the way we came.  Was happy to come to a very ABRUPT stop.

Managed to navigate the Charles De Gaulle Airport – which is always a nightmare.  I avoid going through there whenever possible but my only other option was to depart out of Zurich with Rhonda and her group.  They had to depart the hotel at 3:30 am.  I was one of the first people in line to board the plane and both me and the guy next to me were pulled aside for additional security screening.  Thankfully, once on board,  the plane was nice.

Once we boarded, I was even able to switch seats with 2 passengers who wanted to sit together.  So I got my usual “solo” window seat. Smooth flight, good food, good WiFi, no turbulence and 2 hours of sleep.  Landed on time at JFK but again it was a rough landing.  Then we sat on the tarmac for 35 minutes waiting for a gate.  Took another 30 minutes for bags to come out.  Instead of just being able to drop our bags since they were already tagged, we had to stand in a long line and have the ONE agent who was working look at our passports.  I had to go to another counter to have my boarding pass reissued so my TSA pre check would be on it.   Then the fun really began.  Went up one level to ride the tram to another terminal.  No tram.  Went up another level, rode the Tram and was then directed down a level   Of course, my terminal was the last one after stopping at several other ones. And, my gate was the last gate which was about a 25 minute walk from the tram which was also up another level and then down another level. Most difficult connection I think I’ve ever made in the United States. There were simply no signs for anything.

Finally made it to the gate and my flight departed on time.  It was freezing in the cabin and I finally had to complain.  The flight attendants were really nice and thanked me for letting them know.  Again, we had a really turbulent landing.  But, I’m HOME for a couple of weeks!!!
